Support Information

We offer support in Japanese, English, and a second language.
Please note that there are restrictions on who can receive support and the types of support available in each language.

UTkoyo students can also learn how to use CAWK through a 5min orientation, which is available both in-person and online at any time when CAWK is available.

【 Our Main Service: “Tutorial” 

In accordance with the Center’s guideline, we consult with students on their writing and speaking, focusing on dialogue so that they can revise, improve, and write on their own initiative, with the aim of becoming “autonomous writers”.
We do NOT provide proofread, native checking, or substitute writing and assignments.

  • One-on-one consultation with a graduate student tutor (You may bring other students if they have the same topic).
  • @Online (Zoom) OR CAWK (Bldg.10, Room 103) *You cannot request a face-to-face consultation in advance.
  • Support details and rules vary depending on the supports. Please be sure to check the details of each support below before making a reservation.
  • 1 slot : Maximam 40 mins *You do not have to use the entire time available. Short consultations are welcome.

English Support

We provide support for English writing, presentation, and speaking.

Eligible for support :

Eligibility:
  • Supports ALESS, ALESA, FLOW(required English courses for first-year students)students.
  • Classes and English papers other than ALESS, ALESA, and FLOW are NOT eligible for support.
  • For ALESS experiments, statistics, data analysis, graphing, and more, visit the ALESS LAB.

  • Improve your listening and speaking skills through free English conversation with international students.
  • No reservation required, first-come-first-served basis (please ask at the reception desk)
  • Entering and exiting during the session is also possible.
  • No food or drink is allowed, so lunch is not available.
  • Topics : News, research, hobby, College life… depends on students and tutors joining.
  • English conversation in a small group of up to 4~5 people in a booth seating in the room
  • Recommended wearing a mask
  • 2nd~4th year students : Please pre-register for the first time only.
 
 

(3) Individual Speaking Practice (Available online) :

  • Speaking and discussion practice related to ALESS, ALESA, and FLOW classes.
  • More academic speaking practice than lunchtime chat. 
  • Examples of topics: preparation for discussion in ALESS/SA, FLOW class, papers being conceived or written, your own research, your major or research interests, etc.
  • Speaking ability is NOT required. Even if you are not comfident at speaking in English, please feel free to use this service.
  • Due to congestion, please refrain from using this service at the end of the semester.
  • The tutor in charge may use English only during the session.
 
(4) Browse and get “Pensado” “ALESS Collection” paper books
  • A collection of excellent past ALESS and ALESA papers (“Pensado” and “ALESS Collection”) is available in the Center’s room.
  • No reservation required: Please come to the reception desk during the center’s opening hours.
  • A PDF version is also available online.
  • A small number of copies will be available for viewing only.
 
 
(5) Individual & Group practice of Presentations (without tutor)
  • The center’s room is available for use during opening hours only if there is room available.
  • Reservations are not required *Due to end-of-semester crowd, we may refuse to use our room for this purpose.
  • We are teaching indoors. Please do NOT speak too loudly.

  • Speaking practice is available to any current UTokyo student.
  • We do NOT provide support for qualifications or certification exams. Our service is intended solely as a space for personal speaking practice.
    While you are welcome to suggest situations or topics for practice, we are unable to accommodate requests such as “I’d like to be coached to pass this specific exam.”
  • Practice will be provided according to the student’s level *There is an upper limit to the level of difficulty of the conversation. Please check from the list above.

The Center provides support by obtaining permission from the relevant subject matter and teachers in charge of the subject, as well as by coordinating the content of instruction.
Please understand that it is difficult to provide supports not covered above due to confusion among teachers, students, and the Center.
